Hallmarks are official marks struck on items made of gold, silder and platinum. These marks indicate the purity of the metal and where the item was made. This is a quality control guide useful to buyers and seller of precious metal items.
The most common questions asked are usually concerning 9ct and 18ct gold. 9ct gold rings bear a "375" mark and 18ct gold rings bear a "750" mark.
Rings bearing the crown or gold standard mark would have been made before 1932 but not many rings last this long. They tend to wear out but if you have the hallmark book you can date them and also see where they were made.
If you rub a genuine pearl against a mirror it leaves a white residue (even for coloured pearls). The residue is like a white powder and can scratch the glass mirror surface (so be careful).
Rub the pearl across your teeth and if it’s real it will feel rough. A fake pearl feels smooth when rubbed against your teeth.
Another way to spot fakes is to rub two pearls together. Fake pearls will feel smooth when rubbed against each other. Real pearls have a rough rexture that creates friction when rubbed against one another.
You cannot melt a peral in a flame. The real pearl may suffer marks from holding it in the flame but this should be easy to wipe clean with a cloth.
Any jewellery over £250 normally has to be itemised on home insurance. Please take date stamped photos for proof should you ever need to file a claim.
